How has the Facebook Organic Reach Rate changed over time?

This chart shows the historical monthly Facebook Organic Reach Rate for the past year. As you can see, the monthly average is seldom static so its important to benchmark your performance on Facebook against the monthly average. Use Profile Analytics to benchmark your Facebook Page and track your organic reach rate monthly.

How to calculate Organic Reach Rate on Facebook

Organic Reach Rate (ORR) is the percentage of your followers (page likes) who see your posts WITHOUT spending money on ads.

Post ORR = Organic Reach divided by Followers

Profile ORR = Average of all Post ORR’s during the given time interval (ie: last month)

If you promote (boost) published posts with paid spend, you will see both organic reach and paid reach. But ORR relates only to organic reach. It’s the best indicator you have of understanding what percentage of your community are actually seeing your posts. If it’s really low (eg: single-digit percentage) it might be time to consider investing in paid ad spend.

What affects Facebook Organic Reach Rate?

Well this is the million dollar question. But thankfully, social analytics can really help pinpoint what kind of posts you published historically that achieve higher ORR than other posts. As a general statement, the qualities that make posts engaging are more than likely going to make posts reach further than other posts.

During your analysis you may see posts with Organic Reach Rates over 100%! Yes, this is possible – all it means is that your post is going viral and you are reaching people outside of your followers. On smaller profiles this is actually quite common. Don’t believe the hype – organic reach is definitely not dead on Facebook!
